Basement Waterproofing

The basement of a building is typically below ground and carries the weight of the rest of the building.  It is also indoor where everyone assumes it is safely protected from water sources. Imagine one’s surprise when they found water ponding in the basement.  Groundwater and moisture in the air are also water sources that threaten the dryness and stability of your underground premise, especially since it is also directly in contact with the soil that holds the groundwater. When the ground around your building retains groundwater, water permeability becomes a huge problem. The water pressure will build up and eventually push water through cracks and other openings, causing substantial damage to your foundation concrete.  Basement waterproofing is the best measures to protect your basement from rain, floods and also leaks. A wet or damp basement can cause serious problems for the property owner.  Preventive waterproofing measures are cheaper and more effective compared to the high cost of cleaning up and restoration once water damage has occurred.

Checking for Water Seepage

The best way is preventive basement waterproofing done during construction.  For existing building, regular checks and maintenance will be necessary.  Common symptoms of water seepage and possible water damage are as followed.
  • Mould growing on the basement wall
  • Cracks in the basement walls widening
  • Basement wall and floor appears moist
  • Puddles on the basement floor

Types of Basement Waterproofing

Exterior waterproofing should be used to protect your basement from outside factors. On the other hand, if you are in places where humidity is high, take note. Water can come from the inside of the basement, as water vapour condenses on the colder walls. This is when interior waterproofing is required in order to prevent the walls from turning too moist and consequently mouldy. For the two types of waterproofing, different materials have to be used. And for each building, different chemicals are required based on the conditions and environment surrounding it.
